le weekend à Chicago

*All opinions and recommendations shared in this post are mine and mine alone, shared out of a genuine desire to share my love of all things French.

It was almost a year ago that I posted about a weekend in Chicago with a little French flair. Tony and I have made several visits to the windy city since, but this last weekend in Chi was particularly full of the French flair que j'adore. ♥ I was amazed at the quality experiences we got out of a 24 hour get-away.

Where we stayed: I had recently heard about the Sofitel in Chicago as Rebecca of Every Day Parisian reviewed their restaurant, Café des Architects. When we found a room on Priceline for less than $100 we couldn't pass up the chance. The Sofitel is designed by a French architect,  and seeks to bring "Parisian savoir-faire to Chicago". We were greeted with a bonjour from Chloé who got us all checked into our room with a view and gave me an authentic opportunity to parler en français. Even the room was adorned with petit French touches including an issue of France-Amérique and bath products by Lanvin. While we didn't eat at the restaurant this trip, it's on the list for future visits along with the Petit Margeaux at the Waldorf Astoria.

A few special events: A good hotel deal is enough of an excuse for us to spend a weekend in the city, but it was doubly exciting that Jesse Kanelos Weiner of the Francofly was hosting a watercolor workshop at one of my favorite Chicago bookstores, Read It & Eat. (It is at this same shop where I heard Lindsey Tramuta speak about her book, The New Paris.) If you've been following along you know I dabble with watercolor. I have a style that isn't at all based in any official technique, so it was a lot of fun to learn more about light, shadow, and the use of complimentary colors from Jesse.

I saw Jesse again on Saturday where she had a book signing and discussion with Rebecca (I mentioned her and her blog above) at 57th Street Books. Her latest book Paris in Stride is choc full of her beautiful watercolor illustrations, and features different self-guided walking tours that can jump start your days in Paris. My favorite thing about Jesse's book is that she gives you a place to begin and encourages your own exploration from there. It's truly a chance to be a flâneur. While Lindsey's book sheds light on the new, Jesse keeps her Paris walks a bit more timeless. The books are beautiful companions for planning a trip to Paris with a balance of both.

During the discussion Jesse described what she loves most about living in France. She highlighted the work/life balance, the value of time for family and leisure, and the ability to simply slow down. I truly admire the way Jesse took her passion and made it her career. She shared advice about being your own person and pursuing your passion by working toward it little by little, every day. This is advice I very much cherish and wanted to pass along to you!

A few more tastes of France in Chicago: Ever since we first visited La Fournette, an authentic French bakery in Old Town, no visits are complete without it. I changed up my order this time, adding a raisin roulade to my traditional croissant aux amandes. The roulade will definitely become a part of my regular order. It was absolument délicieux.

What's more? I finally made it to Vosges Haut-Chocolat for a decadent chocolat chaud. I was purchasing a bag of their matcha petites on the way out and ran into Rebecca in the shop! Connecting with Rebecca and Jesse, two people who very much share my interests and passions, was a joy.

Do you seek out a French connection when you travel? I would love to hear about where you've been and the touches of French flair you've discovered.

Warm wishes and bon weekend from me to you,

August Giveaway: A personal creation from me to you!

Bonjour, readers! It has been such a wonderful experience connecting with you on a more personal level through this summer of Fleur de St. Louis giveaways. I'm hoping to do the same again next summer! :) June's giveaway featured creativity, July's giveaway featured learning, and so it would only be fitting that August's giveaway feature wellness. I have found that at the heart of feeling well is doing what you love. This month I'm sharing one of my passions with you.

I've been getting back to my art lately. My bullet journal offers a wonderful creative outlet, but I also love watercolor (l'aquarelle in French - I adore this word). Reading Rae Dunn's France: Inspiration du Jour and Kate Schelter's Classic Style really inspired me to get back to it, and I am incredibly grateful.

(Click images for links to these beautiful books.)

I intended to paint often on our European adventure and it just didn't happen as I'd imagined it would. When we got home and settled back in to every day life, I was craving it big time. One day I completely lost track of time, playing with my new Prima Marketing watercolor sets and painting a few of my favorite things.

(Click the image for a link to these little watercolor "confections".)

(I hung my "classics" next to my closet to enjoy each day as I am getting dressed.)

It was so much fun, I asked a few of my closest friends if they would be willing to send me pictures of 10 to 12 of their "classics". Below you see my friend Megan's classics. I especially love the little tub of Vaseline. So her! She's planning to frame hers, too. :)

There's something so special about creating a unique piece for someone that is 100% them. I would LOVE to do this for one of you! Here's how to enter the August giveaway:

Between now and Friday, August 18 at midnight CST, leave a comment here on the blog or on Instagram with your name and the first item that comes to mind when you think of your "classics".

Ex: Lauren - navy and white striped anything!

Tag a friend who you think might enjoy the Fleur de St. Louis community for a bonus entry! I will announce the winner on Saturday, August 19 and get in touch with you so that I can get started on your "uniquely you" art piece! I am so excited to share this passion with you!

Warm wishes and bon chance from me to you,

Le Bric à Brac: Odds & Ends (n°1)

Bonjour readers, and happy vendredi! I often stumble across odds & ends that I want to share with you, so I decided to start a little series called le bric à brac (odds & ends en français). These will be short posts with discoveries and links I think you might enjoy. Stay tuned for tomorrow, I've got a very special post coming your way. :)

⚜⚜⚜

⚜I ordered Rae Dunn's new book after listening to her interview on the Simple Sophisticate Podcast. It's a beautiful book that gave me the nudge I needed to get back to my sketches.

⚜I recently heard about French Quarter Magazine, a magazine "...seeking to grow an appreciation for, and to celebrate, the rich and colourful history and heritage of France combined with a vibrant mix of modernity and technology. We want to help expand knowledge of history, culture and all the arts through articles on gastronomy, fashion, upcoming exhibitions, interviews of important personalities... Our Franco-American initiative to preserve cultural treasures in both countries is crucial." Thinking of trying out an issue!

⚜Planning a trip to Paris (or just dreaming of Paris as I so often do)? Check out these wonderful Paris City Guides:

The Simply Luxurious Life
Every Day Parisian
Lost in Cheeseland

⚜Tony and I are going to be in Paris on a Sunday. I've heard the city gets quiet on Sundays, so I did some research on ways to spend a Sunday in Paris on this amazing blog!
How to Spend a Sunday in Paris Part I
How to Spend a Sunday in Paris Part II
How to Spend a Sunday in Paris Part III

⚜Fun Twitter account: @Les_Machins for French words, expressions and daily quiz questions to practice!

My Paris Kitchen by David Lebovitz is $2.99 on Kindle!

Beautiful bracelet I've got my eye on, from a company here in St. Louis!

French Weekend, a weekly newsletter by Carrie Anne James of French is Beautiful is a wonderful way to bring a little more French into your life each week.

If you have any fun odds and ends you've discovered, be sure to share them in the comments! I would love to hear from you.

Noticing: la beauté est dans les détails

La beauté est dans les détails. The beauty is in the details. I've been thinking a lot about this today.

I was reading Nichole Robertson's Paris in Color as I sipped my morning coffee. Nichole's images are stunning, and her introduction was inspiring. Her story begins with the decision to move to Paris to live the life she believed in her heart she should be living. She describes wandering the streets of her new home city and "[noticing] details,... [taking] time to take them in."  The book focuses on a project in which Nichole chose one color to observe each time she was out and about in the City of Light. The photography collections she created by color are magnificent and a testament to how "curiosity, patience, and open eyes" can truly make our worlds colorful in more ways than one.

Today on my morning walk to the grocery with The Simple Sophisticate playing in my earbuds, I chose to try out this exercise in noticing. I chose to focus on the color blue. Here are some of the beautiful details I discovered:

(images of the day in blue)

As I was noticing, artist and author Rae Dunn joined Shannon on the podcast. Shannon introduced Rae as "a successful woman who simply followed what she loved and in so doing created a successful business which reminds us all to notice and appreciate the small, every day things." My ears perked up as a story of noticing and pursuit of passion unfolded. Rae discussed her new book France: Inspiration du Jour with Shannon. The book was inspired by Rae's journal where she would write and sketch her daily observations. She says she spends only a few minutes creating each sketch. She encourages listeners to try sketching without overthinking. I think I will leave some blank sketch pages in my bullet journal and try some sketches of what I observe as Tony and I travel Europe in a few weeks. :)

I've been reading You are a Badass by Jen Sincero. In one chapter she posed the following question:
"Have you ever walked down a street that you've walked down a million times and suddenly noticed a house or a tree or a mailbox or something else totally obvious and in-your-face that you've never noticed before?... All this stuff didn't suddenly appear and then you noticed it, it was there all along, you just weren't experiencing it because your focus was directed somewhere else."
Jen's point is that our worlds are filled with "countless awesome versions of reality" and we must make the conscious decision to notice, to not always be wrapped up in our own stories of what is or what can be that sometimes limit us. While Jen's question is metaphorical, I instantly stopped and thought - Hey! That did just happen to me! Tony and I were taking a walk through out neighborhood on the way to the grocery store. On a street that we had walked down several times, we happened to notice a pocket park. We were both shocked that in our three years of living here we had never seen it before, but when we opened ourselves up to taking our neighborhood in, this sweet little park presented itself to us.

(the pocket park Tony and I discovered)

This can happen in our lives, too. When we open ourselves up to new experiences, new opportunities are presented, often opportunities we never imagined. Take some time to notice today - notice the beauty around you, notice the dreams you carry in your heart. May those noticings lead you in the direction of living a life you absolutely love.

A special treat: I had no idea that Nichole Robertson was behind company Obvious State. I recently ordered an adorable tote where I house my books for my French class. I thought you might enjoy this bonus Francophile find!

Warm wishes and happy noticing from me to you,

Celebrating Two Months and Summer at Fleur de St. Louis!

Time flies when you're working on something you love. Today marks two months here at Fleur de St. Louis. I could not be more proud of what's been built and what is to come. Just like I did after one month, I am going to take some time to tell you what I've learned. And if you continue reading to the end, I've got a special surprise in store! First off, ce que j'ai appris pendant le deuxième mois:

Sometimes you have to be OK with not following the plan. When I started Fleur de St. Louis I set a goal to post a minimum of two times a week. I thought I would always have a Wellness Wednesday and a Francophile Friday. While this plan gave me guidance in the beginning, I've been finding that it doesn't always fit with what I'm inspired to write about in the moment. I'm glad the plan got me going, but I'm equally as glad that I've allowed myself to change as I learn and grow.

You can learn about opportunities you never knew existed if you just put yourself out there. Each time I go to a new French spot in STL, I let them know that I am a blogger and ask permission to take photographs for my posts. A few weeks ago at Comme à la Maison I was approached by Susanne who had overheard me asking. She was interested in the blog and shared with me that she was a member of an organization, Les Amis, that promotes "education, preservation, and awareness of French Creole heritage and culture in the Mid-Mississippi River Valley." I have always known that I wanted to explore French history here in St. Louis and in Missouri. My boyfriend and I are now joining Les Amis and I am excited for new opportunities to learn and become involved in my community.

When you are trying something new, you probably won't get it right the first time, and that's OK! Posting my creative work has given me some new and exciting opportunities, one of which I began to work on with enthusiasm only to find that it wasn't turning out how I wanted it to. I will be honest, I panicked. I felt embarrassed. Then a very wise woman asked: "So you aren't happy with it. Then what happened?" The answer is nothing. I simply needed to step away, get myself into a better mindset, and return. Part of changing my mindset involved me asking myself, "What am I not happy with, and what tools do I need to grow so that I can move closer to the outcome I desire?" Let me tell you, this approach did a whole lot more for me than the panicked/embarrassed approach. I still have plenty of growing to do, but I am happy to be on the journey.

And now for a fun summer treat! To say merci for being a part of this community, for believing in my passions, and most of all for pursuing your own, I'm planning a summer of Fleur de St. Louis giveaways! Each giveaway will match my mission here at Fleur de St. Louis: to allow wellness, learning & creativity to flourish. June will be centered around creativity.

One lovely reader will receive a box with a few of my favorite bullet journal extras delivered right to their door! This is my way of saying merci for reading, for continuing to stop by, for e-mailing and commenting and sharing so much love... and to spread the mission of Fleur de St. Louis which is to pursue your passions and live a life you love.

To enter, follow me on Instagram @fleurdestlouis. Watch out for a giveaway post in the next few days, and comment with your name and what brought you to the Fleur de St. Louis community. I cannot wait to continue to connect with you!

Bonjour BuJo (n°9): The Collections

Readers, you have spoken. It seems you enjoy bullet journaling just as much as I do. I know it has been several weeks since I've talked bullet journals on the blog, but today I'm back with one of my absolute favorite reasons to bullet journal - the collections. And you will see soon that several of my collections have a little French flair. :)

You've set up the key. Your index is in place, and your future log is ready to keep you on track for any important dates coming your way. A monthly spread is ready for the start of a new month, and you're playing with some daily layouts or your simply letting it flow. These are the bullet journal essentials. You could stop here and have a fully functioning journal. But if you're anything like me, you're in to spicing things up a bit!

This is where the collections come in. I went back to the source for all things bullet journal to see how they defined collections:
Sometimes you’ll have notes and tasks that are related by a common theme or purpose. Rather than having all these related entries scattered across your Bullet Journal, simply create a Collection Module. Collection Modules, or Collections, are great for organizing specific lists (shopping list, reading lists etc), classes, and projects.
I've already talked collections on the blog, though I don't know that I called them by this name. You might remember my post about using your bullet journal to log your reading, or my post about using my journal to plan for Paris. Both of these are examples of collections in my journal. How do you start a collection? Go to the next blank page, make a heading, and index it. It can be smack dab in the middle of any month. By indexing it, you will be able to easily return even months down the road. With collections, they sky is truly the limit. This is where you take your bullet journal and customize it for your goals, interests and passions.

Here are some other ways I have used collections in my journal:

(Places to Visit in Paris & Francophile Finds - a few of my very first collections.)

(a list of ways to live Simply Luxuriously every day)

(Food for Thought inspired by Fiona Ferris)

(le Français: des habitudes de travail - French study habits)

(inspiration for finding peace)

(Capsule Wardrobe - notes and inspiration from The Curated Closet)

And a few collections in my new journal:

(one month until Paris to-do list & my packing list)

Collections are as useful as they are fun. I hope my ideas here give you a place to start, but I know you could think of collections that would inspire me, too! If you do, please post them on Intagram with #FdSTLbujosetupseries. I would love to see them! Have a beautiful weekend!

Warm wishes from me to you, and happy journaling!

What I Learned This School Year & My Summer Plans

The chairs are stacked, the room is clean, and another successful school year is in the books. For those of you who are new to Fleur de St. Louis, I am an elementary school teacher. From August to May my time is dedicated to my students and my desire to instill in them a total love of learning. In order to do that, I must also be a learner myself. It's no coincidence that learning is part of my mission here. I am on a constant quest to learn - learn French, learn about other cultures, learn about teaching, learn about books, learn about myself. I did a whole lot of the latter this year. Here are a few things I learned:

*Take care of yourself so you can better care for others. This year I got overwhelmed. I got overwhelmed to the point that I knew I had to make a change. I realized the immense value in self care and began putting more time and energy into simply feeling good. I will admit, at first I felt a little selfish. Then I realized that in taking care of myself, I took care of my students, friends, and family in a much better way than I had before. Take care of yourself. :)

*Be present. In that overwhelmed state, I was always thinking about and worrying about what was coming next. Sometimes the things occupying my mind would be things that were completely out of my control. While I am not a total pro at being here now, I have definitely become more mindful of bringing myself back to the present moment. It has made for more quality time with those I love. It has made for more quality time with myself.

*Dance, dance, dance. This was the year of weddings. We attended five. I was in the bridal party for three. And my boyfriend and I danced. We let go of inhibition, we got lost in the moment, and we danced. We didn't stop dancing. When the last song played at that fifth wedding, we wondered, "What are we going to do now?" It doesn't have to be dance, but I think this idea of dancing is a great reminder to find something that brings you immense joy and throw caution to the wind.

*Take time to breathe. I got back to yoga this year. I got better at noticing when I physically could not take deep breaths, and I slowed down and focused on calming my nervous system. Breathing is something we do often without thinking. Thinking about your breath has great power. It's that simple. Breathe.

*Rest when you need to. I went and I went and I went. I needed to rest. I needed to grant myself permission to stop - stop working, stop producing, stop creating long enough to rest. I did all of the above better after rest.

*It really is the little things. A Monday morning croissant, a coffee date with a friend, time with a good book... the smallest things often bring me the greatest joy. Take time for those little things. Treat yourself to those little things.

*Don't be too hard on yourself. Set goals and work toward them, but be OK with the fact that life happens. As one of my favorite quotes reminds, "Be gentle with yourself, you're doing the best you can." You are enough.

*Don't just dream, do! If your passion is calling, listen! I am currently listening to the Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes on audio. I loved when she said, "Dreams do not come true just because you dream them... ditch the dreams and be a doer." To me this doesn't really mean ditch the dream. It means make the dreams real by doing. This year I stopped thinking about continuing my French language learning and I joined a class at the Alliance Française de St. Louis. I stopped wishing I was more of a reader, turned off the TV, and picked up more books. I stopped fantasizing about the possibility of starting a blog of my own and I started writing. I stopped hoping I would make it back to Paris one day and I planned a trip. More opportunities have presented themselves to me than I could have imagined. I no longer feel like a part of me is missing. My passions called, and I listened. I am continuing to listen.

(End of the year gifts from my students. Do they know me or what?)

And now for my summer plans. I will be the first to agree with you. Being a teacher has its perks, and summers off are definitely up there with the best of them. I am excited to take a rest from my every day teaching responsibilities and recharge for the next school year. I am excited for the time I will have to pour into my other passions. Here's what you'll find me doing this summer:

*Writing, writing, writing. I am looking forward to bringing you more here at Fleur de St. Louis. I absolutely love hearing from you the readers, so please comment and let me know if you like what you are seeing. This blog is just as much a passion project for me as it is meant to be an inspiration for you. Let me know how I can help inspire your passions!

*Reading, reading, reading. You should see the physical stack of books on my nightstand. And on my window sill. And in the box to the right of my bed. And in my nightstand drawer. Not to mention the 214 books on my Goodreads "to-read" list. Of course I won't get through all of this, and as I mentioned above I'm not going to be hard on myself. I just want to take advantage of the gift of time and get lost in as many good books as I can.

*Traveling, traveling, traveling. In June my boyfriend and I are off for our European adventure. We will be visiting Copenhagen, Amsterdam, PARIS!!!, Zermatt, and Carpi, Italy. I cannot wait to experience different languages and cultures. I cannot wait to surround myself with Paris and parler français. Check back here for pictures and stories of our travels.

*Creating, creating, creating. If you are a regular here, you know how much I love my bullet journal. I also love creating hand made greeting cards. This summer I want to spend more time with these things and toy with some ideas that I've been bouncing around in my mind. It may just be time to take those ideas and do

I share these lessons with you in hopes that one might speak to you at just the moment you need it. I share these summer plans with you in hopes that you will be inspired to channel more energy into those things that bring you the greatest happiness. As always, thank you for stopping by the blog. You are appreciated more than I can express. Have a great rest of your weekend!

Warmest of wishes from me to you,
